What the 8th house means

Your birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each one an area of life. The 7th house covers the one-to-one partnership; the 8th asks what happens when two lives truly merge. Its subject is what you share, what you risk and what you let go of when you let someone close.

In traditional astrology the 8th house is linked with Scorpio and its rulers Mars and Pluto, which is why it carries a reputation for intensity. It is a succedent house, one that follows an angle and works to build and sustain what the angle begins, so its themes tend to unfold gradually and below the surface.

Intimacy, trust and emotional depth

The 8th house is where closeness goes past romance and conversation into real vulnerability. It describes how easily you trust, what you keep private and how you handle jealousy, loyalty and the fear of being hurt. This is a picture of your attitudes and the patterns you meet around shared resources, not a forecast of gain or loss. Endings, change and the taboo

The 8th house is the house of death and rebirth in a symbolic sense: endings that clear space for something new. It covers grief, major life changes, crises that make you rebuild and the process of letting go. Many astrologers also link it to psychology, secrets, the occult and subjects people tend to avoid.

It does not predict anyone’s death. In a birth chart it describes how you meet loss and change, and what you may be asked to release in order to grow.
