What the 2nd house means
Your birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each one an area of life. After the 1st house describes who you are, the 2nd describes what you have and what you value. Its subject is the material side of life: the things you earn, own and rely on to feel safe.
In traditional astrology the 2nd house is linked with Taurus and its ruler Venus, which is why it is associated with comfort, steadiness and the pleasures of the senses. It is a succedent house, meaning it follows an angular one and is about building up and holding on to what the first house started.
Money, income and earning
The 2nd house describes your relationship with earned income: how you make money, how you spend it and how comfortable you feel with it. It is about your own resources and habits, not about outcomes. A chart shows temperament around money, not how much of it you will have.
Astrologers read the sign on the cusp, any planets inside the house and the planet that rules that sign. A Capricorn 2nd house, for example, suggests a careful, long-term approach to earning, while a Sagittarius one suggests a more generous, easygoing attitude. Money inherited or shared with others belongs to the 8th house instead.
Possessions and what you value
Beyond cash, the 2nd house covers what you own and what you feel attached to: your belongings, your tools, your home comforts and the things you choose to surround yourself with. It also shows what you value in a wider sense, such as quality, beauty, freedom or loyalty.
Because Taurus is linked to the senses, this house also touches your physical pleasures, such as good food, soft fabrics and the feel of a space. What you spend on, and what you refuse to part with, tells you a lot about your real priorities.
Self-worth and security
The deepest theme of the 2nd house is self-worth. How you value your belongings often mirrors how you value yourself, your time and your talents. People with a strained 2nd house may find it hard to charge fairly or to accept that they deserve good things.
Security is the other side of the same idea. This house shows what makes you feel safe, whether that is savings, a stable job, a comfortable routine or a skill nobody can take from you. Healthy 2nd house energy comes from knowing your worth does not depend on what you own.

An empty 2nd house
Most charts have several houses with no planets in them, and an empty 2nd house is very common. It does not mean you will struggle with money or lack confidence. It means the theme is read through the sign on the cusp and the position of its ruling planet instead.
For example, with a Gemini 2nd house and Mercury in your 6th house, earning may be tied to communication and to steady daily work. A planet passing through your 2nd house later can also bring your finances and values into focus for a time.
