The 7th House
House of partnership
The 7th house is the house of partnership: marriage, committed relationships, close business partners and the people who mirror you most clearly. Its starting point, the descendant, sits exactly opposite your rising sign, so it describes what you look for in others and what you learn through them.

What the 7th house means
Your birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each one an area of life. The first six describe your own world: your body, money, mind, home, pleasures and daily routine. The 7th house is the turning point where the chart faces outward, toward other people. Its subject is the one-to-one relationship, the person who stands across from you as an equal.
In traditional astrology the 7th house is linked with Libra and its ruler Venus, which is why it is associated with fairness, balance and agreement. It is an angular house, one of the four most powerful positions in a chart, so planets placed here tend to be prominent in a life rather than in the background.
Love, marriage and commitment
The 7th house is less about dating than about commitment. Flirting and romance belong mostly to the 5th house; the 7th describes the partner you choose to build a life with, what you need from that bond, and the patterns you repeat in serious relationships.
Astrologers read the sign on the 7th house cusp, any planets inside it and the planet that rules that sign together. A Taurus descendant, for example, suggests you value steadiness and loyalty in a partner, while a Gemini descendant suggests you need conversation and variety. None of this predicts who you will marry; it describes the qualities that tend to attract you and the lessons partnership brings.
Business partners, contracts and open rivals
The house covers every formal one-to-one bond, not only romance. Business partnerships, agents, close collaborators and the clients you work with directly all belong here, as do contracts and agreements. Many astrologers look to the 7th house for how you negotiate and how you handle working closely with one other person.
Traditionally it is also the house of open enemies: the people you are in direct, visible conflict with. Competitors, opponents and the other side of a dispute show up here, which fits the theme. The 7th house is about whoever stands opposite you, whether as a partner or a rival.
The descendant: your 7th house cusp
The cusp of the 7th house is called the descendant. It is the point that was setting on the western horizon when you were born, always exactly opposite your ascendant. If you have Aries rising, you have a Libra descendant; if you have Cancer rising, you have a Capricorn descendant.
Because of that opposition, the descendant often describes qualities you do not express easily yourself and are drawn to in others. A very independent Aries rising may find itself attracted to graceful, diplomatic Libra types. The work of the 7th house is learning to recognize those qualities as part of you too, instead of only finding them in a partner.

An empty 7th house
Most charts have several houses with no planets in them, and an empty 7th house is very common. It does not mean you will stay single or that relationships do not matter to you. It means the theme is read through the sign on the cusp and the position of its ruling planet instead.
For example, with a Leo descendant and the Sun in your 10th house, partnership may be tied up with your career or public life: meeting a partner through work, or choosing someone who supports your ambitions. A planet passing through your 7th house later in life can also bring relationships into focus for a time.

- Fairness and the ability to see both sides
- Loyal, committed partnerships

- Growth through other people

- Losing yourself in a partner

- Repeating the same relationship pattern
- Avoiding conflict to keep the peace
- Projecting your own traits onto others
