How the calculator works
Your rising sign is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. To find it we work out the local sidereal time for your birthplace and the angle of the ecliptic there, the same method professional astrology software uses.
Because the whole zodiac rises over about 24 hours, the rising sign changes on average every two hours. That is why it needs your exact birth time; a birth certificate or hospital record is the best source.
What your rising sign means
Astrologers read the rising sign as your outward style: how people see you before they know you, how you react to new situations, and the lens you meet life through. It also sets the starting point of your twelve houses.
The planet that rules your rising sign is called your chart ruler, and its position adds detail to the picture. Your full birth chart shows it.

Questions
Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably. The rising sign changes about every two hours, so without a time it could be any of several signs. If you only know roughly, try the start and end of the window and see whether the sign changes.
Is the rising sign the same as the ascendant?
Yes. Rising sign and ascendant are two names for the same point.
Why do some signs rise faster than others?
Because the ecliptic meets the horizon at a changing angle. Away from the equator, some signs take well under two hours to rise and others well over, which astrologers call signs of short and long ascension.
Is my data stored?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and your birth details are never sent to our server.
